Map & location
Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
Ocean Gardens Hotel sits on a hillside just outside Funchal, Madeira’s charming capital. From here you look straight out across the Atlantic, with the island’s dramatic cliffs and terraced gardens tumbling below.
It’s a peaceful base away from the bustle of downtown, yet still well-placed for exploring. Head into Funchal’s Old Town for cobbled lanes, street art and wine lodges, stroll the marina promenade, or take the cable car up to Monte and the famous botanical gardens.
Madeira is known as the “floating garden” of the Atlantic and this property leans into that, surrounding you with tropical planting and colour, while keeping you within easy reach of lidos, black‑sand beaches and mountain viewpoints.

Facilities
Pool & outdoors
The heart of the hotel is the rooftop freshwater pool, framed by sun loungers, parasols and far-reaching sea views. It’s a calm space more about quiet swims, a good book and a glass of vinho verde than loud music and inflatables. Complimentary pool towels are provided.
There isn’t a beach directly below the hotel – Madeira’s coast here is mainly cliffs and lidos – but you’re within easy reach of Funchal’s famous lido complexes and the black-sand and pebble stretches at Praia Formosa. From there, a seafront promenade takes you back towards town with plenty of cafés and bars en route.
Spa, sports & wellness
A compact spa area includes a sauna (typically for guests 18+), ideal after a day of levada walking or exploring the island. Treatments and access policies can vary seasonally and are payable locally.
While there’s no formal sports programme or gym on site, Madeira itself is the playground: head into the hills for scenic hikes, book boat trips from the marina, or try whale and dolphin watching.
On the practical side, you’ll find a 24-hour reception, luggage storage and a handy shuttle service into Funchal, making it easy to dip into the city without hiring a car.
