Why a P&O Cruises voyage?
Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.
Britain's biggest, year-round from Southampton
P&O Cruises sails more British holidaymakers from the UK than any other cruise line, year-round from Southampton. No flights, no transfers, drive to the ship. The benchmark for UK no-fly cruising.
Family ships AND adults-only ships in one fleet
Iona, Arvia, Britannia, Ventura and Azura cater for the whole family with kids' clubs and waterparks. Aurora and Arcadia are dedicated 18+ adults-only — the same brand, the right ship for your group.
Unmistakably British onboard culture
Sterling onboard, British comfort food at breakfast, British humour in the theatre, British TV and tea-time on tap. Ideal for British holidaymakers who don't want a US-flavoured cruise.
185 years of heritage
Founded in 1837 as the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company. The longest-running cruise heritage in the world, sister-line to Cunard, with all the institutional knowledge that brings to onboard service.
British celebrity-chef dining
Olly Smith's Glass House (wine), James Martin's Beach House (mainstream British), Marco Pierre White's The White Room, plus the Indian-led Sindhu by Atul Kochhar. Speciality dining at fair price points.
Iona and Arvia — the largest UK-built fleet
Iona (2020) and Arvia (2023) are the two newest ships — 5,200 guests each, 17 decks, all the modern facilities. The largest cruise ships sailing year-round from a UK port.
Might not be for you if…
No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where P&O Cruises might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.
You want ultra-luxury cruising
P&O is mainstream-premium, not ultra-luxury. The fares are accessible and the ships are big — that's the point. For ultra-luxury small-ship cruising look at Silversea, Regent Seven Seas or Seabourn.
You want everything all-inclusive
Drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities and shore excursions are NOT included by default. Drinks packages and pre-paid gratuities are available; the new Select fare adds many of these. Saga or Marella bake more in if all-inclusive matters.
You want a US-style mega-ship buzz
Even Iona and Arvia, the biggest P&O ships, deliberately keep a more relaxed pace than Royal Caribbean's Icon-class. No surf simulators, no go-kart tracks, no Broadway-on-water. Resort cruising at British scale.
You hate any kind of formal night
Formal nights remain part of the P&O calendar — typically 1-3 per voyage depending on length. Black Tie Optional, lounge suit acceptable, but jeans and shorts are not allowed in main dining on those evenings.

British comfort plus celebrity-chef speciality dining
Multiple complimentary main dining rooms plus a celebrity-chef speciality roster — Olly Smith, James Martin, Marco Pierre White and Atul Kochhar all on the fleet.
What you actually do all day
SkyDome & Limelight Club
Iona and Arvia's SkyDome — a glass-roofed atrium with daytime pool by day and theatre by night. The Limelight Club hosts headline acts (Bjorn Again, The Three Tenors, Russell Watson) for intimate dinner-and-show evenings.
The Retreat & Oasis Spa
The Retreat is the adults-only top-deck escape on Iona, Arvia and Britannia — pool, hot tub, cabanas, premium bar. Oasis Spa runs Mandara-style treatments fleet-wide with thermal-suite day passes.
Reef kids' clubs
Splashers (2-4), Surfers (5-8), Scubas (9-12), H2O (13-17). Free clubs across the family ships, with dedicated teen lounges and the H2O night-club for older teenagers. Aurora and Arcadia are 18+ adults-only.
Dome by night
On Iona and Arvia, the SkyDome transforms after dark for the Festival of the Sea — water shows, aerial performances and live-band evenings. Genuinely original entertainment built around glass-roof acoustics.
