Why book Viking

Why a Viking voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

Adults-only — no kids, no casinos

Every Viking ship is 18+. There are no kids' clubs, no waterparks, no casinos and no late-night nightclubs. The atmosphere is calm, refined and conversation-led from breakfast to last orders — the cruise people who didn't think they'd like cruising actually choose.

Ocean AND river in one brand

15 small ocean ships (around 930 guests each) and 80+ identical Longships on Europe's classic rivers — plus the Mekong, Nile, Mississippi and Yangtze. Same Viking aesthetic, same included approach, just different waters. Many guests do both.

An included excursion in every port

On every voyage, in every port, Viking includes a guided shore excursion at no extra cost. Optional excursions are available on top, but you can sail an entire 14-night cruise paying nothing extra for shore tours.

Wi-Fi, gratuities and lunch/dinner drinks included

Free Wi-Fi fleet-wide. Beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner included on every fare. Premium drinks are an upgrade (the Silver Spirits Beverage Package); gratuities are included on river cruises and pre-paid as standard on ocean.

Scandinavian design throughout

Light, airy, restrained, very Nordic. Every ocean ship has the same layout, every Longship the same. The Wintergarden glass-enclosed atrium, the Explorers' Lounge with its panoramic windows, the Aquavit Terrace at the bow — Scandinavian "hygge" by design.

Genuinely strong cultural enrichment

Onboard guest-speaker programmes, lectures, classical recitals, port talks before every call, a library of regional reading in every cabin. Viking attracts a curious, well-read demographic and programmes accordingly — the closest a mainstream line gets to small-ship expedition learning.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Viking might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You're travelling with kids

Hard 18+ policy across every Viking ocean and river ship. No exceptions. For family cruising, P&O Cruises, MSC, Royal Caribbean or Princess is a better fit.

You want a high-energy resort atmosphere

Viking is quiet by design. No pool-deck DJs, no casino, no late-night nightclub, no Broadway productions. Theatre is more cabaret and classical music. For resort-scale entertainment look at Royal Caribbean, MSC or NCL.

You want everything truly all-inclusive

Viking includes a lot — Wi-Fi, gratuities (on river), lunch and dinner drinks, included excursion in every port — but cocktails, premium spirits and most pre-/post-dinner drinks are extra. The Silver Spirits Beverage Package adds them; without it, you'll pay per drink. For truly all-inclusive ultra-luxury look at Regent or Silversea.

You want huge variety of dining

Each Viking ocean ship has 6-8 dining venues; the Longships have 2-3. The food is good but the variety is smaller than Royal Caribbean (20+ venues) or NCL. Viking is about destination-focused dining, not floating-food-court breadth.

Dining

Destination-focused dining, all included, no upcharges

Every restaurant on every Viking ship is included in the fare — no per-cover charges anywhere. The menus change with the itinerary, with regional dishes alongside Scandinavian and international classics.

The Restaurant
Main multi-course dining venue on every ocean ship — open seating, menus that change daily.
World Café
All-day market-style café with watch-the-chef stations, included on every fare.
Manfredi's Italian
Italian speciality on ocean ships — antipasti, hand-rolled pasta, ossobuco. Included.
The Chef's Table
Multi-course themed tasting menu that changes throughout each cruise. Included; reservations required.
Mamsen's
Norwegian café in the Explorers' Lounge — open-faced sandwiches, waffles, Karl Johan cake.
Aquavit Terrace
Open-air dining at the bow on ocean ships — breakfast, lunch, sunset cocktails. Casual.
Pool Grill
Casual poolside grill, included. Burgers, salads, daily specials.
In-suite dining
24-hour in-cabin dining from restaurant menus, included on every fare.
On board

What you actually do all day

The Explorers' Lounge & Wintergarden

Two Viking signatures on every ocean ship — the Explorers' Lounge with its forward-facing panoramic windows for sailaway and ice viewing, and the Wintergarden glass-enclosed atrium for afternoon tea with live string music. Scandinavian design at its best.

LivNordic Spa

Nordic wellness programme on the ocean ships — Snow Grotto (a real Nordic snow room), Bath House, thermal suite, sauna, plunge pool, hot tubs. Day passes complimentary; treatments are paid extra.

Cultural enrichment & port talks

Pre-port lectures from regional experts, classical recitals from resident strings and pianists, guest-speaker programmes covering history, art, archaeology and travel writing. A surprisingly substantial education at sea.

Outdoor decks for actual viewing

Every Viking ocean ship has a wraparound promenade, multiple outdoor decks and an infinity pool at the stern with retractable roof. The Longships have a top sundeck that runs the length of the ship. Built for destination cruising, not pool-deck parties.

FAQ

Quick answers about Viking

What's the difference between Viking Ocean and Viking River?
Same brand, same adults-only philosophy, same included approach — different waters. Viking Ocean is 15 small ocean ships (around 930 guests each, all-suite) sailing the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Alaska, Asia, Australia and ocean World Cruises. Viking River is 80+ identical Longships sailing Europe's classic rivers (Rhine, Danube, Rhone, Seine, Douro, Elbe) plus the Mekong, Nile, Mississippi and Yangtze. Many guests do both.
Why is Viking adults-only?
Viking deliberately positioned itself as the "thinking person's cruise" when it launched the ocean fleet in 2015. No children means no kids' clubs, no waterparks, no late-night nightclubs and a calmer onboard atmosphere — calibrated for guests who want destination-focused cruising rather than a floating resort holiday. The 18+ policy is strictly enforced across every Viking ship.
What's included as standard?
Quite a lot for the price: Wi-Fi fleet-wide, an included shore excursion at every port of call, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, all dining venues (no upcharges anywhere), 24-hour room service, gratuities on river fares (pre-paid as standard on ocean), use of the LivNordic Spa thermal suite. The Silver Spirits Beverage Package upgrade adds premium drinks all day.
How is Viking's dress code?
Genuinely no formal nights anywhere. Daytime is casual; evenings are smart casual (a collared shirt and trousers, dresses or smart separates). No tie required, no Gala Night, no tuxedo expected. Among the most relaxed dress codes in cruising — by deliberate brand design.
How big are Viking ocean ships?
Around 930 guests on every Viking Ocean ship — boutique-scale by cruise standards (Royal Caribbean's Icon-class carries 7,600). All-suite, all-balcony cabin configuration, identical layouts across the fleet for predictable guest experience. The newer ships add some refinements but the footprint is the same.
What ports does Viking sail from?
Ocean: Southampton, Bergen, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Athens (Piraeus), Stockholm, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Cape Town, Sydney, Singapore, Tokyo. River: London (Tilbury), Amsterdam, Basel, Budapest, Vienna, Porto, Avignon, Cairo, Luxor, Ho Chi Minh City, Memphis (Mississippi).
What's the Viking Explorer Society?
Viking's loyalty programme. Automatic membership after your first voyage; benefits build with cumulative voyages and nights — increased onboard credit, members-only voyages, dedicated Explorer Society Lounge access on selected sailings, referral credits when you bring a new guest aboard, and milestone gifts at the top tier.
Do I need a passport?
Yes — a passport with at least six months' validity beyond your voyage end date is essential for every Viking sailing, ocean or river. Some itineraries require additional visas (Russia, China, Vietnam, India). Viking's pre-cruise team handles visa documentation if needed.
