Why book Uniworld Boutique River Cruises
Why a Uniworld Boutique River Cruises voyage?
Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.
Boutique-hotel-on-water design
Uniworld's "Super Ships" are designed by Beatrice Tollman (founder of Red Carnation Hotels) — each ship is themed differently, often as a boutique hotel might be. S.S. Joie de Vivre is designed as a French country estate; S.S. Maria Theresa as Bavarian baroque; S.S. Antoinette as a chateau. Statement furniture, custom artwork, original murals.
Genuinely all-inclusive
Every Uniworld fare includes all on-board drinks (premium wines, beer, spirits, cocktails, coffees), all daily shore excursions (one or more per port), gratuities for ship and shore staff, all on-board meals, airport transfers, return airport-port transfers, daily Wi-Fi and unlimited bottled water. The on-board bill is genuinely $0.
Smaller ships, deeper port access
Uniworld ships carry 110-160 guests — small enough to dock in the heart of cities and small towns the bigger ocean cruise lines cannot reach. Vienna at the historic centre, Avignon old quarter, the Hungarian section of the Danube, Vietnam's Mekong floating markets. The ship is the journey.
Multiple included excursions per day
Most ports offer multiple included excursions to choose from — a guided cathedral tour, a wine-tasting in a local vineyard, a market visit, a Cycling Tour with included e-bike. Uniworld's "Choice is Yours" programme means you can mix and match daily.
Nine rivers, four continents
European rivers (Rhine, Danube, Rhone, Seine, Douro, Po) plus Egypt (Nile), Vietnam/Cambodia (Mekong) and India (Ganges). Each region has dedicated ships — the Vietnam Mekong Jewel is the line's newest river ship, designed specifically for Mekong navigation.
No cancellation surprises
Uniworld's booking model is transparent — the fare you see is the fare you pay (all-inclusive) and cancellation terms are clearly published per voyage. Most voyages allow significant cancellation flexibility up to 60 days before departure. No surprise on-board bills, no surprise change fees.
The honest version
Might not be for you if…
No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Uniworld Boutique River Cruises might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.
You want ocean cruising
Uniworld is a river cruise line — every itinerary runs on inland rivers, never on the open sea. Different feel, different format (much shorter port-to-port hops, often two ports per day), different scale. For ocean cruising look at Silversea, Seabourn or Regent in the luxury tier.
You want big-ship choice
River ships are small — 110-160 guests with a single main restaurant, one or two speciality dining spots, single lounge bar, small wellness area and no theatre. The choice on board is intimate-luxury rather than big-ship variety.
You're travelling with kids under 8
Uniworld's standard product is adult-paced — most guests are 55+. Family departures (specific summer dates marked as "Generations") welcome children with light family programming, but these are limited and most of the year Uniworld is adult-luxury.
You hate fixed itineraries
River cruising follows the river's geography — you cannot freelance, the route is fixed. If you prefer ocean-cruise flexibility (skipping a port for sea-day relaxation), river cruising is less flexible. The trade-off: you wake up in a new town centre every morning.

On board
What you actually do all day
The river outside your suite
Floor-to-ceiling windows in every suite mean you wake into a German vineyard slope, a Hungarian medieval town, a Mekong floating market. The river ship is engineering for "the destination IS the ship" — you watch the country slide past on the panoramic outside deck during slow afternoons.
Daily excursions, multiple per day
"Choice is Yours" programme means most ports offer two or three included excursions — a guided walking tour, a wine-tasting in a local cellar, a market visit, a cycling tour with e-bike. Mix and match each day. Premium "Masterpiece Collection" excursions on selected voyages may carry an upgrade.
Sundeck and panoramic lounge
Full open-air sundeck on every ship — outdoor seating for scenic river segments, hot tub, sometimes a small plunge pool. Panoramic indoor lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows for cooler-weather river-watching. Coffee, drinks, regional snacks served throughout the day.
Themed boutique-hotel design
Each Uniworld ship is themed by founder-designer Beatrice Tollman. S.S. Joie de Vivre is a French country estate; S.S. Maria Theresa is Bavarian baroque; S.S. Bon Voyage is a Spanish hacienda. Custom furniture, original artwork, themed lounge bars. No two ships feel alike.

FAQ
Quick answers about Uniworld Boutique River Cruises
How is river cruising different from ocean cruising?
River cruising is small-ship, small-port, slower-paced. Most days you wake up in a new historic town centre (the ship docks directly in the old quarter); typical voyages have one or two ports per day with quick disembarkation. River ships don't have the on-board variety of big ocean ships — single main restaurant, one or two speciality venues, small lounge bar, no theatre — but the destination is the entertainment. Ocean cruising is bigger ships, longer sea days, more on-board choice.
What are the "Super Ships"?
Uniworld's newer European fleet (S.S. designation) — designed as floating boutique hotels by Beatrice Tollman, founder of Red Carnation Hotels. Each ship has a distinctive theme — French country, Bavarian baroque, Hungarian art nouveau — with custom furniture, original artwork and themed lounges. Older "River" prefixed ships are still in operation but with simpler luxury finishes; the Super Ships are the new flagships.
How do daily excursions work?
Most ports offer multiple included excursions — Uniworld calls this their "Choice is Yours" programme. You typically pick one option per port from a daily list: a guided walking tour of the old quarter, a vineyard or brewery visit, a market or food tour, a cycling tour with included e-bike, or a "go further" optional active experience. Premium "Masterpiece Collection" excursions on selected voyages may carry an upgrade fee.
Is everything genuinely included?
Genuinely included: all on-board drinks (premium wines, beer, spirits, cocktails), all on-board meals, daily excursions (one or more per port from a choice), gratuities, airport transfers (both ways), Wi-Fi, bottled water, speciality coffees. Excluded: international flights (these are added on request — Travelisto books fly-cruise packages), reserve wines and specific premium spirits, optional "Masterpiece Collection" excursion upgrades, paid spa treatments.
What's the dress code?
Smart-Casual throughout. No formal nights, no jacket-and-tie expectations. Open-neck collared shirts, trousers, dresses fine for all venues. The Captain's Dinner is mildly dressier — a smart-casual upgraded look (no shorts) — but suits and ties are absolutely not required. Daytime is casual; pool deck and sundeck are swim-friendly.
How are gratuities handled?
Gratuities are INCLUDED in the cruise fare — both ship-crew gratuities and shore-excursion guide gratuities. No daily per-guest service charge is added to your onboard account. Optional additional tipping for exceptional service is welcome but not customary.
How does Uniworld compare with Viking and AmaWaterways?
Uniworld, Viking and AmaWaterways are the three major luxury river cruise operators on European rivers. Uniworld's differentiator is the themed boutique-hotel design philosophy and the broader inclusion package (multiple included excursions per port, all drinks, gratuities, transfers). Viking offers more itineraries on more rivers worldwide but tends to charge for premium drinks and some excursions. AmaWaterways focuses on active itineraries with cycling and longer hikes included. Pricing per night is broadly comparable across the three for European voyages; the inclusion package decides which one represents better value for your specific itinerary.
How do I book Uniworld through Travelisto?
Uniworld is bookable through us directly — we hold a long-standing relationship with The Travel Corporation (the parent company). Tell a Travel Designer the destination and rough dates — Europe rivers (Rhine, Danube, Rhone, Seine, Douro, Po), Egypt Nile, Mekong, or India Ganges — and we come back with current availability, the all-inclusive fare with pre/post hotel options and an ABTA/ATOL-protected booking. Popular Christmas Markets and Tulip-season voyages book 12-18 months ahead.
