Polar-only expedition cruising — the most adventure activities and the best guide-to-guest ratio in the industry
Quark has been the polar-only expedition specialist since 1991, when founders Lars Wikander and Mike McDowell took the first commercial passengers ever to the geographic North Pole. They've been polar-firsts ever since: first commercial circumnavigation of Antarctica (1996), first to confirm the Snow Hill Emperor penguin colony (2004), first to break Amundsen's southernmost record (2006), first to offer North Pole hot-air ballooning (2012). Four small expedition ships (138-199 guests), flagship Ultramarine with twin helicopters, the industry's best 1:6 guide-to-guest ratio, the largest selection of off-ship adventure options (kayak, camp, mountain bike, hike, helicopter flight-see, paddleboard, hot-air balloon).

Why book Quark Expeditions
Why a Quark Expeditions voyage?
Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.
Polar-only — 100% specialisation
Quark doesn't cruise the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. Every ship in the fleet operates exclusively in Antarctica (Nov-Mar) and the Arctic (Apr-Oct). Every team member is polar-trained at Quark Academy. Every itinerary is polar by design. The depth of specialisation is unmatched — competitors who cruise polar AND tropical inevitably balance compromise. Quark doesn't.
The most off-ship adventure activities in the industry
Optional adventure activities on Quark voyages include sea kayaking, paddleboarding, ice camping (overnight on Antarctic snow), polar plunge (Antarctic + Arctic swimming), snowshoeing, ski/snowboard touring, mountain biking, helicopter flightseeing, helicopter-supported mountain biking, alpine kayaking, alpine heli-trekking, ice sheet landings, hot-air ballooning (North Pole), Shackleton's Crossing on South Georgia. No other operator offers this many off-ship options.
Ultramarine — twin helicopters for unmatched access
The Quark flagship Ultramarine carries TWO twin-engine helicopters — the only luxury polar expedition vessel to do so. Helicopter flightseeing, helicopter-supported mountain biking, helicopter-led alpine kayaking, ice sheet landings. 20 quick-launching Zodiacs, advanced sustainability systems, sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows. The most capable expedition platform in the industry.
Quark Academy — industry-leading staff training
Quark Academy (Ushuaia, Argentina) is the only proprietary polar training programme in the industry — all new and seasoned team members complete rigorous training in IAATO/AECO regulations, zodiac driving, emergency procedures, wildlife observation, and soft skills like storytelling and cultural awareness. The result: the most consistently trained guides in polar cruising.
1:6 guide-to-guest ratio
Quark's 1:6 expedition-team-member to guest ratio is the highest in the industry. On a Zodiac excursion, on a shore landing, in the lounge for a casual chat — you have unusually high access to subject-matter experts (marine biologists, ornithologists, glaciologists, historians). The deep-pocket benefit of polar specialisation.
Polar Promise sustainability framework
The most holistic polar sustainability framework in the industry (launched 2019). Four pillars: Principles (AECO + IAATO governance), Planet (20% carbon emissions cut per passenger, 100% waste recycled), Partnerships (Nalunaiqsijiit Inuit Cruise Training, Tundra to Table Inuit culinary programme), and Promise (transparent annual reporting). $200,000+ guest-contributed in 2023 to polar conservation auctions.
The honest version
Might not be for you if…
No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Quark Expeditions might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.
You want a sun-and-sea voyage
Quark only goes polar. No Mediterranean, no Caribbean, no tropics. Antarctic temperatures hover around freezing in the summer season; Arctic varies from freezing to mid-teens Celsius. For warm-water cruising look at Caribbean lines (Royal Caribbean, NCL) or Indian Ocean expedition (Silversea, Seabourn shoulder season).
You want ultra-luxury hardware
Quark ships are very comfortable but expedition-grade, not luxury-resort. No marble bathrooms, no butler service, no champagne all-inclusive (drinks charged à la carte). The trade-off is access — Quark goes places Silversea's Silver Endeavour and Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot simply can't — but for hardware-luxury, look at those luxury polar competitors.
You don't want the helicopter cost premium
Ultramarine voyages are more expensive than Ocean Explorer / World Voyager — typically a 30-50% premium for the helicopter capability. If you don't plan to use the helicopters for activities (flightseeing, mountain biking, ice sheet landings) the Ocean Explorer or World Voyager voyages on the same routes offer the same wildlife and landings at a substantially lower price.
You want a relaxed pace
Polar expedition cruising is intense — early morning briefings, multiple shore landings, optional kayak/paddle outings, evening recap and lecture. Sea days on the Drake Passage may also have rough crossings. The pace is full-on for 11-22 days. If you want relaxed sea days, choose Celebrity, HAL or Princess.

On board
What you actually do all day
Two helicopters on Ultramarine
Unique to Quark's flagship: TWO twin-engine helicopters for flightseeing, helicopter-supported mountain biking, alpine heli-trekking, ice sheet landings, snorkelling drop-offs and snorkel pickups. No other polar luxury cruise ship operates two helicopters. Antarctic ice-class hull, dynamic positioning, sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows.
Wellness with sauna, spa, hot tub
Sauna (with windows on Ultramarine), spa with treatment rooms, hot tub on aft deck, fitness studio. Ultramarine adds a dedicated wellness deck. Modest wellness compared with luxury cruise lines — the polar experience is the priority — but adequate for active polar voyages.
Quark Photography Programme
Professional photographer joins every voyage — daily image-review sessions, optional one-on-one instruction. Citizen-science contribution programmes for bird counts, marine mammal observation, and microplastics sampling.
Hot-air balloon at the North Pole (Ultramarine)
On Ultramarine's rare North Pole departures (June-July), guests can join Quark's pioneering hot-air balloon flight at the geographic North Pole — the world's northernmost hot-air balloon experience. Quark was the first operator to offer this in 2012. A genuine "world first" experience.

FAQ
Quick answers about Quark Expeditions
What's Ultramarine like — and is it worth the premium over Ocean Explorer?
Ultramarine is Quark's purpose-built flagship (2021), 199 guests, ice-class 1A Super. Two twin-engine helicopters (the only luxury polar ship with two), 20 zodiacs for fast launching, dynamic positioning, ice-strengthened hull. Includes a glass-walled sauna and modern interiors. The 30-50% premium over Ocean Explorer pays for: helicopter access for flightseeing, helicopter-supported activities (mountain biking, alpine heli-trek, ice sheet landings), faster zodiac deployment, and the higher-spec interiors. If you plan to use the helicopters and can stretch the budget, Ultramarine is worth it; if not, Ocean Explorer covers the same routes with the same wildlife and the same world-class expedition team at a lower fare.
How is Quark different from Lindblad, HX or AE Expeditions?
Quark is polar-only — 100% specialised in Antarctic and Arctic operations, with the industry's highest 1:6 guide-to-guest ratio, the largest selection of off-ship adventure activities, and Ultramarine's twin-helicopter capability. Lindblad operates 23 ships across all 7 continents and Galápagos — broader but less polar-deep. HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) is more value-priced polar + Norwegian coastal hybrid. AE Expeditions is similarly polar/expedition focused but with a 3-ship fleet, Certified B Corp status, and lower price point. Choose Quark for the most varied off-ship activities and helicopter access; Lindblad for the NG editorial overlay and global itinerary range; AE for B Corp credentials and smaller-ship landings; HX for value polar.
Can I really go to the North Pole?
Yes — Quark's Ultramarine and selected charter voyages reach the geographic North Pole (90°N) during the brief June-July season. 14-15 nights, departing from Longyearbyen (Svalbard) or Helsinki/Murmansk. Hot-air balloon flight at 90°N (a Quark first since 2012). Helicopter flightseeing over the Pole. Polar bear and walrus sightings on the approach. Pricing typically $50,000-$80,000pp — these voyages are rare and book 18-24 months ahead.
What's included in adventure options?
Included as standard on most voyages: shore landings, Zodiac cruises, glacier hikes, photography support, expert-led nature walks. Optional add-on activities (must be pre-booked): sea kayaking, paddling excursion, ice camping (overnight on Antarctic snow), polar plunge, snowshoeing, ski/snowboard touring, mountain biking, helicopter flightseeing (Ultramarine), alpine kayaking (Ultramarine), helicopter ice sheet landings (Ultramarine), hot-air ballooning (North Pole only). Pricing varies — kayaking typically $850-$1,000 per voyage; helicopter flight $500-$1,500 per session. Most sell out 3-6 months before departure.
How does Quark Academy work?
All new Quark expedition team members complete a structured certification programme at the Quark Academy Centre in Ushuaia. Topics include zodiac operation, polar wildlife behaviour, IAATO + AECO regulations, emergency preparedness, knot-tying, radio + GPS use, off-loading procedures, cultural awareness for Inuit and Arctic indigenous communities, storytelling and guest engagement. Seasoned team members re-certify regularly. The result is the most consistently trained expedition team in the polar industry.
How do Antarctic Express "fly the Drake" voyages work?
On Antarctic Express Fly the Drake itineraries you fly direct from Punta Arenas (Chile) to King George Island in the South Shetlands (about a 2-hour charter flight) — bypassing the often-rough Drake Passage. You join the ship and Zodiac onto Antarctic Peninsula. The compressed 7-8 day format vs the traditional 11-12 day Drake-crossing format. Pricing is generally a premium over Drake-crossing voyages, but you gain time and skip the Drake. Subject to weather — occasional flight delays or alternate-routing if conditions don't permit.
