Why book Norwegian Cruise Line

Why a Norwegian Cruise Line voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

The original Freestyle Cruising

Norwegian invented the format more than two decades ago — no assigned dining times, no fixed seating, no formal dress code. Eat where, when and with whom you like; show up to dinner in jeans if it suits you. The blueprint every other line copied.

Free at Sea — bundle five extras into one fare

NCL's signature upgrade package adds an unlimited premium drinks package, speciality dining credits, shore-excursion credits, Wi-Fi powered by Starlink, and free 3rd/4th guests in the same cabin. Worth £1,000+ on a 7-night sailing.

The Haven — a luxury ship within the ship

NCL's all-suite enclave with butler and concierge, a private restaurant, private courtyard with pool, and exclusive sundeck. The closest thing to ultra-luxury cruising while keeping every facility of the wider ship.

20+ restaurants per ship

Steakhouse, French bistro, sushi, hibachi, Italian, Mexican, modern grill, dedicated Indian on some ships — plus complimentary main dining rooms. Speciality dining is included on Free at Sea fares.

Great Stirrup Cay & Harvest Caye

Two NCL-only destinations — a 2,600 sq m pool, water-slide tower, jet skis and white-sand beaches at Great Stirrup Cay (Bahamas), plus the resort destination Harvest Caye (Belize) on Caribbean itineraries.

The only race tracks at sea

Genuinely unusual on-board entertainment: go-kart race tracks (multi-deck, full throttle), laser tag, virtual-reality arcades, full Broadway-quality theatre productions and award-winning live music venues.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Norwegian Cruise Line might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You want adults-only

NCL is family-friendly with kids' clubs (Splash Academy, Entourage), connecting cabins and family suites. If you want a kid-free escape, Virgin Voyages, Saga or Viking Ocean is a better fit.

You like fixed dining times and formal nights

Freestyle Cruising deliberately removes both. There are no Gala Nights, no formal seating arrangements, no maître d' tables. If that's what you love about cruising, look at Cunard or Holland America.

You want everything truly all-inclusive

The Free at Sea upgrade adds drinks, Wi-Fi, dining credits and excursion credits — but it's an upcharge per fare type, not the standard. Service charges are also separate. For genuinely all-inclusive, Regent Seven Seas or Saga is closer.

You prefer small, quiet ships

NCL ships carry 2,000–4,200 guests with high-energy entertainment, water parks, race tracks and pool-deck DJs. If you want a 200-guest small-ship pace, Windstar, Oceania or Sea Cloud is a different proposition.

FAQ

Quick answers about Norwegian Cruise Line

What is Freestyle Cruising?
Norwegian invented Freestyle Cruising more than two decades ago. There are no assigned dining times, no fixed seating in main restaurants, and no formal dress code — including no Gala Nights. You eat when you want, where you want, with whom you want. Every other major cruise line has since copied parts of it; NCL still does it most consistently.
What's included with Free at Sea?
NCL's signature upgrade bundle includes a Premium Beverage Package (unlimited cocktails, wine, beer, soft drinks), speciality dining credits (number of dinners scales with sail length), shore-excursion credits (typically £50 per port), Wi-Fi minutes (Starlink-powered), and 3rd/4th guests sail free in the same cabin (taxes only). Upgrade charge varies by sail length — £99–£619 per person.
What's The Haven?
The Haven is NCL's all-suite ship-within-a-ship enclave on most newer ships. Suite guests get a private restaurant, private courtyard pool and sundeck, butler and concierge service, premium drinks package, premium Wi-Fi, all gratuities and priority everywhere. The closest thing to ultra-luxury cruising while keeping every facility of the wider ship.
Are gratuities included?
No — daily service charges are added per guest per day at $20–$25 depending on cabin type and are NOT included in the standard cruise fare. They can be pre-paid before sailing. Suite and Haven guests on certain promotions have gratuities included; check at booking.
What's Great Stirrup Cay?
NCL's private Bahamas island, called at on most Caribbean itineraries. Has a 2,600-square-metre pool, water-slide tower, white-sand beaches, jet skis, cabanas and food and drinks venues. Open dawn-to-dusk on call days. Recently expanded with new beach areas and a marketplace.
Are NCL ships good for families?
Yes — Splash Academy is the kids' programme for ages 3-12 (split into age bands), Entourage is the teen lounge for 13-17, and family connecting cabins are widely available. Pride of America (Hawaii) and Encore-class ships are particularly family-friendly. NCL is generally less explicitly family-themed than Royal Caribbean or MSC.
Do I need a passport?
Yes — passport with at least six months validity beyond your voyage end date is the safest choice for any sailing. US citizens on closed-loop Caribbean voyages from US ports can sometimes use alternative ID, but a passport is always recommended. Hawaii sailings on Pride of America are domestic for US citizens.
What's the Latitudes Rewards programme?
NCL's seven-tier loyalty programme: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Sapphire, Diamond and Ambassador. Earn 1 point per cruise night, +1 for suites/Haven, +1 for Latitudes Insider Offer bookings. Status carries across to Oceania and Regent Seven Seas (sister brands under NCL Holdings).
