Cyprus holidays

Paphos archaeology, Larnaca beaches, the Troodos mountains and Akrotiri British-base wineries — Cyprus is winter sun a 4-hour flight from London.

Overview

Welcome to Cyprus

Cyprus is the easternmost Mediterranean island and one of UK travellers' most reliable winter-sun options — beach weather genuinely works November to March on the southern coast. It's also a Greek-Cypriot Greek-speaking republic with a complicated post-1974 history (the north remains Turkish-occupied), exceptional Roman and Byzantine archaeology, and some of the warmest sea in the Mediterranean in late summer (28°C+ in August).

The headline Cyprus trip splits into two halves. The south (Greek-Cypriot Republic of Cyprus) covers Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa/Protaras, and the Troodos mountains inland. The north (Turkish-controlled Northern Cyprus, with crossings allowed for tourists) covers Kyrenia, Famagusta and the Karpaz peninsula. Most UK travellers stay south; a 2-3 day excursion into the north shows a different, quieter, more time-warped Cyprus.

The Cypriot coast divides by character. Paphos is the historical-and-resort west — the UNESCO Roman mosaics at the Paphos Archaeological Park, Aphrodite's Rock, and the easy 4-5* resort base for the area. Limassol is the urban-cosmopolitan center — wine country inland, a young food scene, and the cruise port. Larnaca is the main airport city, with the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque on the salt lake and the easy-going Larnaca seafront. Ayia Napa & Protaras on the east are the family-resort end — Fig Tree Bay, Konnos Bay, and the famous nightlife of Ayia Napa Square (skippable if not 20).

The Troodos mountains inland are the surprise for travellers who think Cyprus is all beach. UNESCO Byzantine churches (Asinou, Kykkos Monastery), the wine villages (Omodos, Lefkara), and Mount Olympus (1,952m, snow in winter, hiking in summer). A 2-night Troodos extension breaks up a beach holiday with culture and altitude.

The seasonal rhythm: April-June and September-November are the sweet spots — sea warm (22-26°C), air comfortable, no extreme heat. July-August: hot (35-38°C inland, mid-30s coast) but the sea is at its warmest (28°C). November-March: the only Mediterranean island where coastal day temperatures stay 16-20°C in winter — making Cyprus the UK's genuine winter-sun-without-long-haul option.

Cypriot food is the underrated Mediterranean cuisine. Meze culture (warm and cold small plates — halloumi, taramasalata, dolmades, lounza, sheftalia) is genuinely Cypriot rather than imported from Greece. Commandaria — the world's oldest named wine (3,000 years and counting) — is produced only in the Troodos foothills. The fish tavernas of the coast and the mountain village kebab houses are equally rewarding.

Cyprus pairs naturally with Turkey (1h flight from Larnaca to Antalya or Istanbul), Greece (3h flight to Athens, then island-hop), Israel (1h flight to Tel Aviv), and Egypt (2h flight to Cairo). Within Cyprus, 7 days is a beach week plus one inland excursion; 14 days is south + north + Troodos done properly.

Why we love Cyprus

Rossella — Travel Designer · Luxury & Destination Specialist

Cyprus is the reliable winter-sun island — the one Mediterranean place where beach weather works in February. It's also one of the friendliest tourist destinations I know; service is unhurried, prices are honest, and the food is much better than the resort image suggests.

My quiet recommendation: pair a beach week in Paphos or Protaras with two nights in the Troodos mountains. The contrast is what makes the trip memorable — Byzantine monasteries on Tuesday, the Mediterranean on Wednesday.

Cyprus works almost year-round. April-June and September-November are the prime months — warm sea, comfortable air. July-August is hot (35°C) but the sea is at its warmest (28°C+). November-March: the only Mediterranean island where coastal day temperatures stay 17-22°C in winter — genuine UK winter-sun without long-haul. Troodos mountains get snow December-March.

Flights & how to get there

Direct flights from major UK airports to Larnaca and Paphos — typically 4h 30m. Hire cars are essential outside the resort towns; the road network is excellent (motorways link all coastal cities). Drive on the left — same as the UK, a legacy of the British colonial era.

Visa & passport

UK passport holders can stay 90 days in any 180-day period — no visa required. Cyprus is in the EU but not Schengen. Northern Cyprus is accessible by crossing on foot or by car at official checkpoints (Ledra Street in Nicosia is the most common pedestrian crossing). Check current rules at GOV.UK Foreign travel advice: Cyprus.

Currency & money

The Euro (€). Card payments universal. Tipping: 10% is standard for restaurant service. Northern Cyprus uses Turkish lira but euros are widely accepted.

Language & tipping

Greek (south) and Turkish (north). English is universally spoken — Cyprus was a British colony until 1960 and English is taught in schools. Road signs are bilingual.

Health & safety

No mandatory vaccinations. EU healthcare reciprocal arrangements apply with a UK GHIC card. Tap water safe across Cyprus. Buy comprehensive travel insurance before you travel.
