Portugal holidays

Lisbon's tiled streets, the Douro valley's terraced vineyards, the Algarve's cliff beaches and Madeira's volcanic interior — Portugal at its most varied.

Overview

Welcome to Portugal

Portugal has been Europe's quiet best-value Mediterranean-feeling destination for a decade now, and finally the world has caught up: Lisbon has gone from off-the-radar to one of Europe's most-talked-about city breaks, the Algarve still delivers honest beach value, the Douro Valley's terraced wine country is one of the world's great vineyard landscapes, and Madeira and the Azores quietly offer some of the best year-round walking weather in Europe.

The classic Portugal trip is Lisbon (3-4 nights) + Sintra (a day-trip, ideally a night) + Porto (2-3 nights) + the Douro Valley (2 nights), 10-12 days total. It hits the headlines without rushing. The natural beach extension is the Algarve (3-7 nights, west for cliffs at Lagos and Sagres, east for the quieter Tavira and the Spanish-feeling Eastern Algarve).

Lisbon is the city that's changed most in the past decade. The yellow trams, the azulejo-tiled façades, the seven-hill geography and the cliff-top miradouros (viewpoints) are all still here, but the food scene has gone from "good seafood" to "world-class new Portuguese", the Time Out Market is one of the great food halls, and the LX Factory and Marvila neighbourhoods are full of design hotels and rooftop bars. Three nights minimum.

Porto is Lisbon's smaller, hillier, more atmospheric rival. The Ribeira waterfront on the Douro is one of Europe's prettiest urban views, the Livraria Lello bookshop is a Harry Potter pilgrimage, and the port-tasting lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia are an essential half-day. Add the Douro Valley up-river — terraced vineyards, port-house quintas, and the Pinhão wine villages — for a 2-night extension.

The Algarve is bigger than UK travellers realise. The western Algarve (Lagos, Sagres) has the dramatic limestone cliffs and the Atlantic surf coast; central Algarve (Albufeira, Vilamoura) is the family-resort heartland with the broadest range of all-inclusives; the eastern Algarve (Tavira, Olhão) is much quieter, with shallow sandbars and Portuguese flavour. Most UK travellers default to the centre but our designers steer to west or east for second visits.

Portugal's Atlantic islands are the surprises. Madeira has year-round mild walking weather, levada water-channel hiking trails, and Funchal's old town. The Azores — nine volcanic islands four hours from Lisbon — are Europe's "Hawaii", with whale-watching, hot springs, and dramatic crater lakes. Both pair beautifully with a 4-5 night mainland Portugal trip.

Portuguese food rewards travellers who like seafood. The bacalhau (salt cod) is the national obsession (1,000 recipes for it, the saying goes), but the Portuguese kitchen is also pork (porco preto, leitão suckling pig), grilled fish across the coast, the famous pastel de nata custard tart, and the under-rated Portuguese wines (Vinho Verde, Douro reds, Alentejo blends, Madeira fortified). Cheap, simple, generous — exactly the right register for a Portugal holiday.

Portugal pairs naturally with Spain (Lisbon-Madrid AVE in 4h, Lisbon-Seville drive 5h) and with Morocco (3h flight Lisbon-Marrakech). 14-day Iberia itineraries combining Portugal and Andalusia are one of our most-booked combos.

Why we love Portugal

Rossella — Travel Designer · Luxury & Destination Specialist

Portugal is the country I send people to when they tell me Italy and Spain are getting too crowded and too expensive. It's not undiscovered — Lisbon hasn't been undiscovered for ten years — but it still has authentic, friendly, generous-portion energy at half the price of the equivalent Italian holiday.

My quiet recommendation: do Lisbon + Sintra + Porto + Douro + the Algarve in 14 days, with the Algarve at the end as the beach-decompression. The Atlantic is colder than the Med, but the cliffs are dramatic and the seafood is the best I know.

City breaks

Portugal's cities reward 2-4 nights each — pair two for a tailor-made multi-centre trip.

Lisbon

Lisbon

The yellow trams, the azulejo-tiled facades, the seven hills, and a contemporary food scene that has earned international attention.

Porto

Porto

Hillier, more atmospheric Porto — Ribeira waterfront, port-tasting lodges across the river, and the Livraria Lello bookshop.

Cruises

Lisbon is one of the great Atlantic cruise gateways — transatlantic crossings, Mediterranean loops and Atlantic-island itineraries (Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands) all run from here. Funchal (Madeira) and Ponta Delgada (Azores) are themselves cruise stops. Many travellers pair a 7-night Atlantic cruise with a pre- or post-stay in Lisbon or Porto.

Mainland Portugal is at its best April-October. May, June, September and October are the sweetest — long days, warm sea, manageable crowds. The Algarve works year-round (mild winters, 17-18°C in February). Madeira is year-round mild (18-25°C all months). The Azores are summer-best (May-September) for whale-watching.

FAQs

Portugal — your questions

When is the best time to visit Portugal?

April–October for the mainland; May, June, September and October are sweetest. The Algarve works year-round (mild winters). Madeira and the Azores are year-round.

Is the Algarve overrun in summer?

Central Algarve (Albufeira, Vilamoura) is, July–August. Western Algarve (Lagos, Sagres) and Eastern Algarve (Tavira) stay much calmer. We steer most travellers to those.

Do I need a visa for Portugal?

UK passport holders can stay 90 days in any 180-day period (Schengen). ETIAS required from its launch (expected 2026).

Can I combine Portugal with Spain?

Yes — Madrid to Lisbon is a long but pleasant train. Or fly Lisbon/Porto–Barcelona/Madrid in 2h. We often build 14-day Iberia itineraries.

What's the deal with Madeira and the Azores?

Madeira is the volcanic-walking island, year-round mild. The Azores are 9 islands, whale-watching, hot springs, dramatic landscape. Both are 3.5h from London, very under-rated.
