Andorra holidays

Pyrenean ski runs and tax-free shopping a short drive from Toulouse or Barcelona.

Overview

Welcome to Andorra

Andorra is the small, mountain-locked Pyrenees principality between France and Spain — co-ruled by the French president and the Bishop of Urgell, with 468 sq km of skiable terrain across two interconnected resorts (Grandvalira and Vallnord, combining for some of the largest skiable areas in Europe at affordable prices), tax-free shopping in the capital Andorra la Vella, the UNESCO-listed Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley (45 sq km of glacial-valley walking with old shepherd huts and the country's longest-preserved cultural landscape), Caldea spa (one of Europe's largest thermal-water spa complexes, 32°C+ Pyrenean mineral water in the heart of the capital), and a quiet summer hiking-and-cycling scene that's less-discovered than the ski-season visitor numbers.

A 4-7 day Andorra trip: Andorra la Vella arrival (2-3 nights — Casa de la Vall medieval government house, Sant Esteve church, Caldea spa, the tax-free shopping along Avinguda Meritxell) → Grandvalira ski week or summer hiking based at Soldeu or El Tarter (2-3 nights for the Grandvalira ski-area access in winter, or the Coll de Pal/Sorteny/Coma Pedrosa hike network in summer) → optional Vallnord at Pal-Arinsal or Ordino-Arcalís (2-3 nights). Andorra is genuinely small — total cross-country drive is under 90 minutes. The country has no international airport; access is via Barcelona (3 hours by road), Toulouse (3 hours), or Girona (4 hours).

Andorra is not in the EU but is in the Schengen area — UK passport holders can stay 90 days in 180. The country uses the Euro. Catalan is the official language (Andorra is the only country where Catalan is the sole official language); Spanish and French are universally spoken; English in tourism areas. The food: trinxat (cabbage-and-potato hash with bacon), escudella stew, the local sausages and cheeses, the tax-free wine selection from neighbouring France and Spain. Tipping not customary.

Best for: ski-and-snowboard families (the Grandvalira ski area is excellent value vs French and Swiss Alps), Pyrenees hikers, those seeking a quiet Iberian-cultural detour, shopping-and-spa weekend travellers. Often combined with Barcelona for a Catalonia-and-Andorra trip, or as a wintertime ski week.

Why we love Andorra

Rossella — Travel Designer · Luxury & Destination Specialist

Andorra is the Pyrenees ski trip I send people on who want Alps-level skiing at a fraction of Alps prices. Drive in from Barcelona, ski for 5 days, drive out — that's the structure.

City breaks

Andorra's cities reward 2-4 nights each — pair two for a tailor-made multi-centre trip.

Andorra la Vella

Andorra la Vella

The capital — VAT-free shopping, Caldea thermal spa, and a Pyrenees-valley setting.

Escaldes-Engordany

Escaldes-Engordany

Twin parish-city joined to Andorra la Vella — the Caldea thermal spa, the Sant Pere Martir church, Casino del Pirineu.

Cruises

Andorra is landlocked in the Pyrenees, so the country itself has no cruise port. Travellers usually combine Andorra with a Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona (a 3-hour drive away) — the natural pre- or post-cruise stay for skiers and hikers.
