Armenia holidays
Ancient monasteries and Caucasus mountains in a country where most UK travellers never set foot.
Overview
Welcome to Armenia
Armenia is the world's first Christian nation (year 301 AD, predating Constantine's Edict of Milan by 12 years) and one of the most under-discovered cultural destinations in Europe — mountain monasteries (Tatev accessed by the world's longest reversible cable car, Geghard carved into the rock-face, Khor Virap with its dramatic Mount Ararat backdrop, Noravank in its red-rock canyon, Haghpat and Sanahin UNESCO twins), the spiritual presence of Mount Ararat (technically in Turkey but a national symbol), the brandy-and-jazz capital Yerevan (the world's longest-continuously-inhabited capital), Lake Sevan's high-altitude inland sea (the world's second-largest alpine lake by area), the Areni wine-cave region (where the world's oldest winery was found, dating to 4,100 BC), and a diaspora-connected hospitality that's famously warm to first-time visitors.
A 7-10 day Armenia trip: Yerevan (3-4 nights — Republic Square at the musical-fountain hour, the Cascade modern-art complex with the Cafesjian gallery, the Vernissage weekend flea-market, the Matenadaran ancient-manuscript museum, the Armenian Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd, the brandy-distillery tour at ArArAt or Noy, day-trip to Echmiadzin cathedral and Zvartnots ruins) → day-trip or overnight to Khor Virap monastery with Mount Ararat view + Noravank monastery + Areni wine cave (1-2 nights based at Yeghegnadzor) → Tatev monastery via the Wings of Tatev cable car (1 night at Goris) → north to Dilijan and Lake Sevan (1-2 nights — the Dilijan National Park forested-resort area, Sevanavank peninsula monastery, swimming/boating on Sevan) → optional Lori region for Haghpat and Sanahin UNESCO monasteries (1-2 nights).

UK travellers get 180 days visa-free entry (one of the world's most generous policies). Armenia is highly affordable — boutique hotels at £40-80, restaurant meals £8-15. Armenian (its own unique script and alphabet, designed in 405 AD) is the national language; Russian widely understood by older generations; English in Yerevan and tourist areas. The food: khorovats (the national grilled-meat tradition), dolma (stuffed grape leaves), spas (yoghurt-based soup), lavash flatbread baked in tonir clay-pit ovens (UNESCO-listed cultural heritage), the brandy that Churchill reportedly received as Stalin's personal gift, plus the Areni-region naturally-fermented wines.
Best for: religious-history travellers, culture-deep European-edge travellers, hikers (the Janapar Trail crosses the country east-to-west over 21 days), wine and brandy travellers, those drawn to the Armenian diaspora connections. Pair with Georgia (border crossing 3 hours from Yerevan) for a 2-week Caucasus circuit.

Why we love Armenia
Armenia is the cultural depth-charge of any Caucasus trip — Tatev monastery alone justifies the journey. And the food is wonderful.
