Bermuda holidays

Pink-sand beaches, British heritage and year-round 20–28°C — a 7-hour flight from London.

Overview

Welcome to Bermuda

Bermuda is not Caribbean — it's a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic, 600 miles east of North Carolina, with a uniquely refined atmosphere: pink-sand beaches (the coral skeletons from the surrounding reef give the sand its blush colour), pastel-painted limestone-roofed houses (the white-stepped roofs catch rainwater for the island's drinking supply), five championship golf courses on 21 miles of island, and a British civility unusual for a beach destination. Daily fast ferries link Hamilton, Royal Naval Dockyard and St George's — most travellers rent scooters (cars are limited to local residents only) or use the comprehensive bus network.

A 5-7 day Bermuda trip: arrival into L F Wade International Airport → Hamilton-area base or south-shore-beach resort base (4-6 nights). Headline experiences: Horseshoe Bay's pink sand (the most-photographed beach), Crystal Caves and Fantasy Cave (limestone caves with crystal-clear underground lakes), the UNESCO Town of St George's (the oldest continuously-inhabited English-speaking settlement in the New World, founded 1612), the Royal Naval Dockyard (the British North America Squadron base from 1809 to 1953, now restored with shops, the National Museum of Bermuda, the Dolphin Quest, and the Bermuda Maritime Museum), the Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo, the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse for sunset views, and the Fort St Catherine. Golf at Mid Ocean Club, Tucker's Point, Port Royal, Belmont Hills. Bermuda is small — 21 miles long — so a base anywhere on the island reaches everything in under 30 minutes.

UK travellers get 90 days visa-free entry on arrival. Bermuda uses the Bermudian Dollar (BMD) pegged 1:1 with USD — both interchangeable. English is the official and universal language. Dress is more-traditional than other beach destinations — Bermuda shorts are local business attire (knee-length, paired with knee-high socks and a blazer for proper office wear), restaurants increasingly require collared shirts, and the island's atmosphere remains slightly Edwardian-leisured. The food: fish chowder (the national dish, served with rum and pepper sherry), Bermuda fish sandwich (rye bread, fried fish, cheese, hot sauce, the lunch staple), Hoppin' John (the Easter-time Sunday lunch), Bermuda onions (an island variety), the dark-rum-and-ginger-beer Dark 'n' Stormy cocktail (the national drink, trademarked to Gosling's).

Best for: short-haul-from-East-Coast luxury travellers (Bermuda from New York is 2 hours), golfers (5 championship courses make Bermuda one of golf's most-concentrated destinations), couples seeking refined-but-relaxed, those wanting Caribbean climate without Caribbean culture, cruise travellers (Bermuda is a major summer Norwegian/RCL/Celebrity cruise destination from New York and Boston). The May-October beach window is the prime season.

Why we love Bermuda

Amanda — Travel Designer · Music & Culture

Bermuda is for the traveller who wants pink sand and a gin-and-tonic on a hotel terrace — not a Caribbean party. The pace and atmosphere are distinctively British-Atlantic.
