Brazil holidays
Rio's beaches, the Amazon, Iguazu Falls and Salvador's Afro-Brazilian heritage — Brazil at Carnival or quietly off-season.
Overview
Welcome to Brazil
Brazil is South America's largest, loudest and most-varied country — Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana-Ipanema-Sugarloaf-Christ-the-Redeemer headliner; the colonial Salvador da Bahia and the Afro-Brazilian cultural heartland; Iguaçu Falls on the Argentine border; the Amazon at Manaus or Belém; the Pantanal wetlands (the world's largest tropical wetland — better than the Amazon for actually-seeing jaguars and wildlife); the unspoiled Northeast beach coasts of Jericoacoara, Fernando de Noronha and Pipa; and the colonial mining towns of Minas Gerais (Ouro Preto, Tiradentes). Brazil rewards two-week-plus trips; the country is the size of Western Europe.
A 14-day classic Brazil itinerary: Rio de Janeiro (3-4 nights — Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer, Tijuca rainforest, the Lapa nightlife, the beach culture at Copacabana and Ipanema, samba at Carioca da Gema or Lapa) → Iguaçu Falls (2 nights, both sides) → Salvador da Bahia (3 nights — Pelourinho UNESCO old town, capoeira shows, the seafood-and-dende-oil cuisine of Bahia) → optional Amazon (Manaus, 3-4 nights on a riverboat or jungle lodge) OR Pantanal safari (4 nights, the world's best big-cat sightings on land) OR Northeast beach (Jericoacoara, 4 nights for the most photogenic Brazilian beach).

The Brazilian rhythm is the trip's organising principle — bossa nova in Rio's lounge bars, samba in Lapa, axé and afoxé in Salvador, forró in the Northeast, sertanejo in the country. Portuguese is the language and the cultural reality (Spanish-speakers struggle more than they expect); English is patchy outside upscale tourism. The food: feijoada (the national bean-and-meat stew, traditionally Saturdays), moqueca (Bahia's coconut-fish stew), pão de queijo (cheese bread), Brazilian steakhouse rodízio (Fogo de Chão style), açaí bowls everywhere on the coast, caipirinha (national cocktail — cachaça, lime, sugar).
Best for: cultural-and-music travellers, beach travellers seeking variety (Brazil's 7,500km coastline offers everything from city beach to deserted-island beach), nature travellers (Amazon, Pantanal, Atlantic Forest), foodies. Carnaval in February-March in Rio or Salvador is one of the world's great events — book accommodation 6+ months ahead.

Why we love Brazil
Brazil is the trip I send people on for serious South American depth — Rio for the iconic, Iguazu for the natural wonder, and Salvador or the Amazon for the cultural-Brazil dimension.
