Cambodia holidays

Angkor Wat at dawn is the headline, but Cambodia rewards the curious — Siem Reap markets, Mekong river life and Cardamom mountain trekking.

Overview

Welcome to Cambodia

Cambodia is South-East Asia's most-archaeologically-rewarding country — Angkor Wat (the largest religious monument in the world, built in the 12th century by the Khmer Empire, UNESCO-listed and the country's defining experience), Angkor Thom and the Bayon's smiling-stone-face temples, Ta Prohm's jungle-strangled temple ruins (famously used in Tomb Raider), and the wider Angkor Archaeological Park (400 sq km, takes 3-5 days to do justice with a 7-day pass). Add the harrowing Khmer Rouge history at the Tuol Sleng (S-21) prison and the Choeung Ek Killing Fields in Phnom Penh, the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake (the world's largest freshwater fish-supply lake, with stilt-and-houseboat communities), the colonial-era riverfront of Battambang with bamboo train rides, and the small but emerging beach scene at Koh Rong, Koh Rong Sanloem, and Kep on the Gulf of Thailand.

A 10-14 day Cambodia trip: Phnom Penh arrival (2-3 nights — the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Tuol Sleng prison and Killing Fields, the National Museum, the riverside, the Russian Market for souvenirs) → fly to Siem Reap (4-5 nights — Angkor Wat sunrise, Angkor Thom and Bayon, Ta Prohm jungle temple, the outer-circuit temples by tuk-tuk: Banteay Srei, Preah Khan, Neak Pean, the floating village day-trip on Tonle Sap, the night markets and Pub Street nightlife) → optional Battambang (2 nights — bamboo train, colonial-era buildings, the Phare Ponleu Selpak circus school) → Cambodian coast: Sihanoukville is the main entry but Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem are the headline beach islands (3-4 nights of basic-to-mid-range beach time) → optional Kampot and Kep (1-2 nights — French-colonial riverside Kampot, the Kep crab market, salt fields and pepper plantations).

UK travellers get an e-Visa easily online ($30) or visa-on-arrival ($30-36). Cambodia uses the riel but US dollars are universally interchangeable in tourism (carry small-denomination USD bills, riel for change under a dollar). Khmer (the national language, with its own beautiful script) is the language; English widely spoken in tourism, French among older generations. The food: amok (fish-coconut curry steamed in banana leaves, the national dish), lok lak (stir-fried beef), nom banh chok (Khmer noodle soup, the traditional breakfast), khmer red curry, plus the tropical-fruit shakes and Angkor Beer. Cambodia is one of the cheapest South-East Asian countries — guesthouses at $15-40/night, restaurant meals at $3-10.

Best for: archaeology-and-history travellers (Angkor is genuinely one of the world's great cultural-historical sites), photographers (Angkor Wat sunrise is a once-in-a-lifetime), South-East Asia first-timers seeking depth over polish, those drawn to colonial-and-Khmer-Rouge history. Often combined with Thailand (Bangkok-Siem Reap flight 1 hour), Vietnam (Phnom Penh-Ho Chi Minh boat or road) or Laos.

FAQs

Cambodia — your questions

When is the best time to visit Cambodia?

November to March is the dry, cool season — best for Angkor. April–May is brutally hot. June–October is the wet monsoon — lush, fewer tourists, more affordable.

How long do I need at Angkor?

Three days is the right amount. Day 1: Angkor Wat at sunrise + Bayon. Day 2: Banteay Srei + Roluos. Day 3: Beng Mealea or Koh Ker. Multi-temple fatigue is real; we pace itineraries deliberately.

Is Cambodia safe for tourists?

Yes — Cambodia is one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia for travellers. Standard precautions apply (avoid unmarked land off paths near the Thai border). Check current FCDO advice before you go.

Can I combine Cambodia with Vietnam or Thailand?

Easily and we recommend it. Two-week Vietnam + Cambodia (Hanoi → Halong → Hoi An → Saigon → Siem Reap) is one of our most-booked Southeast Asia itineraries.

Do I need a visa for Cambodia?

Yes — UK passport holders can get an e-Visa online before travel, valid for 30 days. We arrange this as part of your booking.
