Fiji holidays

330 South Pacific islands — overwater bures, kava ceremonies, and warm water year-round.

Overview

Welcome to Fiji

Fiji is the South Pacific's most accessible island-paradise — 333 islands of which ~110 are inhabited, the Melanesian-Polynesian Fijian culture is famously warm (the universal "Bula!" greeting), and the country has decades of small-resort tourism infrastructure on the offshore islands. The mainland of Viti Levu holds the international airport (Nadi), the Denarau resort coast (the big-name brand resorts — Hilton, Sheraton, Westin, Sofitel), and the cultural capital Suva. The headline beach holidays are on the Mamanuca archipelago (small islands 30 minutes by boat from Denarau — Castaway, Tokoriki, Malolo, Plantation, Likuliku) and the further-out Yasawa archipelago (1-2 hours by boat or seaplane — Likuliku, Yasawa Island Resort, Turtle Island). The splurge tier (Vomo, Six Senses, COMO Laucala) is among the South Pacific's most exclusive.

Trips are typically 8-12 nights, often as a stopover en-route to or from Australia or New Zealand. Many travellers split: 4-5 nights on a Mamanuca or Yasawa island (one resort per stay — the boats and islands don't encourage hopping) plus 3-4 nights at a Coral Coast resort (Pacific Harbour, Natadola, Yatule). Diving and snorkelling are world-class — the Great Astrolabe Reef off Kadavu and the Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Strait are headlines. Surfing at Cloudbreak (off Tavarua, accessed via surf-camps) is among the world's great breaks; Tavarua and Namotu surf islands are bookable.

Fijian culture is the trip's organising principle: the kava ceremony (the muddy-water pepper-root drink shared in a communal bowl), the traditional meke dance, the lovo (earth-oven feast), the Sunday church-choir singing (Fiji is heavily Christian Methodist). UK travellers get 4 months visa-free on arrival. English is the official language; Fijian and Fiji Hindi widely spoken (the latter from a large indo-Fijian community descended from 19th-century indentured labour). The food: kokoda (coconut-milk-cured fish), the curries of the Indian-Fijian tradition, palusami (taro leaves in coconut), lovo-cooked meats, fresh seafood and tropical fruit.

Best for: honeymooners and milestone celebrations, families (the all-inclusive island resorts have kids' clubs and bure-villa accommodation), divers and snorkellers, those wanting a South Pacific stopover en-route Australia/NZ, surfers (Tavarua, Namotu, Cloudbreak). The dry season May-October is the prime window; November-April is the wet season and cyclone window with rare direct hits.

Fiji families and honeymoons are the perfect mix — Tokoriki for couples, Castaway for kids. The Fijian welcome is genuine; you feel it the moment you land.
