Georgia holidays
Tbilisi old town and sulfur baths, the Caucasus mountains, Kakheti wineries and Black Sea Batumi — Georgia is the Caucasus' rising destination.
Overview
Welcome to Georgia
Georgia is the cultural surprise of the Caucasus — a Black Sea coast (Batumi's casino-and-seaside-promenade), the world's oldest wine-making tradition (8,000 years, the qvevri clay-jar method UNESCO-listed, the Kakheti wine region the heartland), the Caucasus mountains with Kazbegi's Gergeti Trinity church framed by the 5,033m peak (one of the most-photographed mountain scenes in Europe), the medieval defensive-tower villages of Svaneti (Mestia and Ushguli — UNESCO, Europe's highest year-round inhabited settlements at 2,100m), and a UNESCO Old Town capital in Tbilisi with sulphur baths, art-nouveau-meets-Eastern character, and a buzzy modern restaurant scene that has put Georgian wine on the global map.
A 10-14 day Georgia trip: Tbilisi (3-4 nights — Old Town walking route from Metekhi Church to Abanotubani sulphur baths, Narikala Fortress, Dry Bridge flea market, Rezo Gabriadze theatre, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, day-trip to UNESCO Mtskheta the ancient capital) → drive north on the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi/Stepantsminda (2 nights — Gergeti Trinity church hike, Truso Valley) → Kakheti wine country at Sighnaghi and Telavi (2-3 nights — supra feasts at family-run wineries, qvevri-method tastings at Schuchmann, Pheasant's Tears, the Tbilvino) → optional Svaneti at Mestia and Ushguli (3-4 nights, summer only — drive or scenic Mestia flight) → optional Batumi Black Sea coast (2 nights). The country is small; distances are 3-6 hours.

UK travellers get an extraordinary 365 days visa-free entry — one of the most generous in the world. Georgia has invested heavily in tourism infrastructure and English signage; English is widely spoken in tourism. The food culture is the trip-defining experience: khinkali (juicy meat dumplings eaten by hand), khachapuri (cheese-bread with regional variations — the Adjarian boat-shaped one is iconic), churchkhela (the candle-shaped walnut-and-grape-must sweet), the ubiquitous tomato-and-cucumber salad with walnut sauce, lobio bean stew, ostri spiced beef. The supra (traditional feast) is the cultural high-point — multi-hour table-of-toasts led by a tamada (toastmaster).
Best for: food-and-wine travellers (Georgia is one of the world's great food destinations), mountain trekkers (Svaneti and Kazbegi are world-class), affordable-Europe-alternative travellers (boutique hotels at £40-100, restaurant meals £10-20), photographers (Gergeti Trinity, Ushguli, Tbilisi old town), Silk Road historians. Pair with Armenia and Azerbaijan for a 3-week Caucasus circuit.
