Japan holidays
Tokyo's modernity, Kyoto's temples, the cherry blossom and autumn maple seasons — Japan is for travellers who like their destinations rich and rigorously planned.
Overview
Welcome to Japan
Japan is the bucket-list trip that consistently exceeds even the highest expectations — Tokyo's neon-modern density meeting Kyoto's wooden temples and stone gardens, the bullet trains that arrive to the second, the food culture from corner sushi-counter to three-Michelin-star kaiseki, the Hokkaido powder snow and the Okinawan beaches, the country-as-quiet-craftsmanship feel that emerges quickly. The headline Japan trip is Tokyo (4 nights) + Kyoto (3-4 nights) + Hakone or Mount Fuji (1 night) + Osaka or Hiroshima (2 nights), 12-14 days total.
Tokyo is a 4-night minimum — Shibuya Crossing, Asakusa's Senso-ji, Shinjuku's neon, Ginza's shopping, the contemporary food scene in Daikanyama and Shimokitazawa, the day-trip to Nikko. Kyoto is the cultural counterpoint — 1,600 temples, the bamboo forest of Arashiyama, the geisha district of Gion, the Golden Pavilion. Three to four nights minimum.

For repeat visitors, Japan opens further. Hokkaido for the powder snow, the Sapporo Snow Festival (February), and the lavender of Furano. Okinawa for the subtropical beach holiday with Ryukyuan culture. Shikoku for the 88-temple pilgrimage. The Japanese Alps (Takayama, Shirakawa-go) for the thatched-roof villages.
The seasonal rhythm matters more than for most countries. Cherry blossom (sakura) is end of March to mid-April, central-Japan-then-northwards over 3-4 weeks — book 6 months ahead. Autumn momiji (red maple leaves) is late October-November. November-December is the quiet sweet spot — comfortable temperatures, no crowds, autumn colours fading into early Christmas illuminations. July-August: hot, humid, and the peak of summer festivals (Gion Matsuri, Awa Odori). January-March: cold, dry, ski season in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps.
Japanese food is one of the most diverse and rewarding cuisines on earth. Beyond sushi: ramen regional variations (Sapporo miso, Hakata tonkotsu, Kyoto shoyu), the kaiseki multi-course tradition, izakaya pub-style small plates, the standing-sushi bar, the depachika (department-store food hall), and the convenience-store meals that genuinely surprise UK travellers. Cooking classes available at every level.
Japan pairs naturally with South Korea (2h flight Tokyo-Seoul), Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Within Japan, the JR Pass is the headline travel hack — 7, 14 or 21 days of unlimited bullet trains, including the Tokyo-Osaka-Hiroshima route. Buy before arrival.

Why we love Japan
Japan is the once-in-life trip that becomes a returning love — almost every traveller I send on a first Japan trip is back within 3 years for a different season. The 14-day Tokyo + Kyoto + Hakone + Hiroshima + Miyajima route is the sweet spot for first-timers.
My quiet recommendation: book a 1-2 night ryokan (traditional inn) with kaiseki dinner. The Japan-as-craft cultural experience is in the ryokan, not the headline cities.

FAQs
Japan — your questions
When is the best time to visit Japan?
Cherry blossom (sakura) runs late March to early April. Autumn foliage (koyo) peaks mid-November. Both are stunning and packed; book 9–12 months ahead. May, June and October are quieter alternatives.
Is the JR Pass worth it?
For a 2-week itinerary with the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima loop, yes. For shorter trips or single-city stays, no. We calculate this per itinerary.
Do I need a visa for Japan?
UK passport holders get 90-day visa-free entry. No advance authorisation required currently.
Is Japan good for families?
Yes — particularly for kids over 8. Bullet trains, theme parks (Disneyland Tokyo, USJ Osaka), traditional ryokans. Younger kids can find the food challenging.
How much spending money do I need?
Japan is mid-range pricing for Asia. Meals £8–25, museums £5–10, taxis £8–20. Cash is still widely needed; we recommend changing GBP to JPY before travelling.
