Montenegro holidays
Adriatic fjord at Kotor, mountain national parks and a coast in fast-rising demand.
Overview
Welcome to Montenegro
Montenegro packs an extraordinary amount of varied scenery into a country smaller than Wales — the Bay of Kotor (sometimes called Europe's southernmost fjord, although technically a submerged river canyon) is UNESCO-listed and one of the most-photogenic European bays, with the medieval walled towns of Kotor, Perast, and Risan winding around its shoreline; Sveti Stefan (the iconic islet hotel near Budva that is on every Montenegro postcard) is the resort-luxe headline; Lake Skadar (the largest in the Balkans, shared with Albania) has wine country, a pelican colony, and quiet fishing villages; the Durmitor National Park's Tara River Canyon is the deepest in Europe (1,300m, second only to the Grand Canyon worldwide); and the small medieval mountain town of Žabljak is the gateway to skiing, hiking and rafting.
A 7-10 day Montenegro trip: arrival into Tivat or Podgorica airport → Kotor (2-3 nights — UNESCO Old Town walking, the climb up the city walls to the Fortress of San Giovanni for the bay panorama, a day-trip to Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks island church, the Lady of Tepa Sunday market) → Sveti Stefan / Budva Riviera (2 nights — the iconic islet view from the Adriatic Beach Resort, Budva Old Town walls, Mogren Beach, the Ostrog Monastery built into a sheer cliff face nearby) → Lake Skadar (1-2 nights at Virpazar — boat trips through the lily-pad-and-pelican waters, wine tasting at Plantaže) → Durmitor National Park and Tara River Canyon (2-3 nights at Žabljak — Black Lake walking circuit, Tara River rafting trip, the Đurđevića Tara Bridge viewing) → optional Old Royal Capital of Cetinje (1 night — small-town museum complex of the former kingdom).

UK travellers get 90 days visa-free entry. Montenegro uses the Euro despite not being in the Eurozone. Montenegrin is the official language (closely related to Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian); English is widely spoken in tourism, Italian common on the coast, Russian widely understood. The food: Adriatic seafood (the prawns of Boka Kotorska, fresh black-shell mussels, the squid risotto), Negush prosciutto from the mountain villages, kačamak (cornmeal porridge with cheese), Vranac and Krstac wines from the Lake Skadar region, plus excellent Croatian-influenced restaurant scene around Kotor and Budva.
Best for: Adriatic coast travellers (Montenegro is the Croatia alternative — cheaper, less-touristed, equally photogenic), photographers (Kotor Bay, Sveti Stefan, Tara Canyon are extraordinary), driving-tour travellers (the coast road and the mountain interior make a perfect 1-week circuit), adventure travellers (Tara rafting, Durmitor hiking, Lovćen mountain). Often combined with Croatia (Dubrovnik to Kotor is 2 hours), Bosnia-Herzegovina, or as a 10-day standalone trip.
From the team
Why we love Montenegro
Montenegro is the small-country gem I send people to who want Dubrovnik's drama without Dubrovnik's prices and crowds. The Bay of Kotor at sunrise, before the cruise ships, is one of the great Adriatic moments.

Cruises
Kotor is one of the great smaller Mediterranean cruise ports — the Bay of Kotor is a UNESCO-listed fjord-like inlet, and the medieval walled town of Kotor itself is one of the Adriatic's most-photographed stops. Most Adriatic cruises include Kotor.

4 escorted tours through Montenegro — guided, customisable, fully ATOL-protected.
Every Travelisto tour runs with a small group (max 16), an English-speaking local leader, and is fully ATOL-protected. Most tours are also bookable as private departures — same itinerary, your party only, your dates.
