Namibia holidays

Sossusvlei's red dunes, the Skeleton Coast, Etosha's wildlife pan and the German heritage of Swakopmund — Namibia is the great self-drive country of Africa.

Overview

Welcome to Namibia

Namibia is the most photogenic landscape country in Africa — the red Sossusvlei dunes at sunrise (some of the tallest in the world, the dead-tree forest at Deadvlei is one of the planet's most-photographed scenes), the wildlife of Etosha National Park (concentrated at waterholes in dry season for outstanding game viewing), the desolation of the Skeleton Coast with its shipwrecks and Cape fur seal colonies, the German-colonial seafront town of Swakopmund, and the surreal Damaraland with its desert-adapted elephants and the Twyfelfontein rock-art (UNESCO).

Namibia is famously easy to self-drive — paved roads are excellent, gravel roads are well-maintained, and a 4x4 with rooftop tent (Britz, Bushlore, Avis) is the classic adventure-camping rig. Classic 14-day self-drive: Windhoek (1 night) → Sossusvlei (2 nights for sunrise dune climb) → Swakopmund (2 nights) → Damaraland (2 nights, desert elephants, rock art) → Etosha NP (3 nights at Okaukuejo and Halali rest camps for waterhole game viewing) → Waterberg Plateau (1 night) → return. Lodge-based travellers can do this same route at higher comfort: Wolwedans for Sossusvlei, Mowani for Damaraland, Onguma for Etosha.

The wildlife: Etosha has lion, elephant, rhino (black and white), cheetah, giraffe, zebra, hyena, plus stunning birdlife. Damaraland's desert-adapted elephants and Hartmann's mountain zebra are unique to the region. The Skeleton Coast has Cape fur seal colonies of 100,000+. Namibia's German colonial heritage shows in the architecture of Swakopmund, the beer (still brewed to Reinheitsgebot), and the apfelstrudel.

Best for: photographers (Sossusvlei is one of the world's great landscape destinations), self-drive adventure travellers, families with older children (Namibia's well-developed roads make it more family-feasible than other African safari destinations), and second-time Africa travellers who have already done Kenya or South Africa. Often combined with Botswana, Cape Town and Victoria Falls.
