Nepal holidays
Kathmandu's medieval temples, Pokhara's lakeside views of Annapurna, Everest base-camp trekking and Chitwan's jungle — Nepal for landscape and culture in equal measure.
Overview
Welcome to Nepal
Nepal is the world's mountain-trekking heartland — 8 of the world's 14 peaks above 8,000m are in Nepal, including Everest (8,849m) on the Tibetan border. But the country offers far more than the trek: the Kathmandu Valley's 7 UNESCO sites (Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar, Bhaktapur Durbar, Pashupatinath Hindu cremation ghats, Boudhanath stupa, Swayambhunath monkey temple, Changu Narayan); the Chitwan National Park's rhino-and-tiger jungle safari (the southern Terai region); the lakeside Pokhara with paragliding off Sarangkot and the Annapurna views; the Mustang region's Tibetan-cultural high desert plateau (the "forbidden kingdom"); and increasingly accessible Tibetan-Buddhist monastery experiences (Lumbini, Buddha's birthplace; the Tengboche monastery on the Everest Base Camp trek).
A 14-21 day classic Nepal trip: Kathmandu arrival (3-4 nights — the 3 royal Durbar Squares, Boudhanath circuit, Pashupatinath ghats at sunset, the Thamel district restaurants, day-trip to Bhaktapur) → fly to Pokhara (2 nights — lakeside, paragliding off Sarangkot, the World Peace Pagoda) → optional Annapurna trek: the easy Ghorepani/Poon Hill 4-day trek for sunrise mountain views, or the Annapurna Circuit (12-18 days for the full classic), or the Annapurna Base Camp trek (8-10 days, more accessible than Everest) OR Everest Base Camp trek from Lukla (12-14 days for the bucket-list trek; helicopter return saves 2-3 days descent). For non-trekkers: Chitwan NP (3 nights for jungle safari) → Lumbini (2 nights for the Buddha's birthplace and the international monastery zone).

UK travellers get 90 days visa-on-arrival ($30-125 USD depending on duration). Trekking permits are arranged via Kathmandu agencies — TIMS card plus the national park or restricted-area permit. October-November is the peak trekking season (clear views, stable weather); March-April is the second window (rhododendron bloom). June-September is the monsoon. Nepali is the language; English is widely spoken in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and along trekking routes. The food: dal bhat (lentil-and-rice, the daily staple), momos (Tibetan-style dumplings — Nepal's most-popular snack), Tibetan thukpa noodle soup at high altitude, Newari cuisine specialties in the Kathmandu Valley.
Best for: trekkers and mountain climbers (Annapurna, Everest, Manaslu, Langtang, Mustang circuits cover beginner to expert), Buddhist-and-Hindu cultural travellers, photographers (the Himalayan light is famous), wildlife travellers (Chitwan rhino and tiger). Often combined with Bhutan, Tibet (when accessible), or India.

FAQs
Nepal — your questions
When is the best time to visit Nepal?
October–December is the post-monsoon peak: clear mountain views, dry weather. March–May is spring (rhododendron bloom). Avoid June–September (monsoon).
Do I need a visa for Nepal?
UK passport holders need a visa-on-arrival or e-Visa ($30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days).
Do I need to trek to enjoy Nepal?
No — Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan deliver an excellent week without any serious walking. Trekkers can add 7–14 days; the Annapurna circuit suits most travellers more than Everest base camp.
Can I combine Nepal with Bhutan or India?
Yes — Kathmandu–Paro (Bhutan) is 1h direct; Kathmandu–Delhi (India) is 1.5h. 14-day India + Nepal + Bhutan is a Travelisto specialist trip.
