Gorilla trekking is the trip's defining experience and rewards careful preparation. The Volcanoes National Park covers the Rwandan portion of the Virunga Mountains volcanic massif — five volcanoes shared between Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. The mountain gorilla population in the wider Virungas has recovered from 250 individuals in the 1980s to over 1,000 today (the only great-ape species to be removed from "Critically Endangered" status and moved to merely "Endangered") — a conservation success driven by careful tourism revenue funding park rangers. Rwanda releases just 96 permits per day, distributed across 12 habituated gorilla family groups, each with 8 visitors per day for one fixed hour. Permits must be booked many months in advance — typically 6-12 months for peak season (June-September and December-February) and 3-6 months for green season (March-May and October-November). Permits are non-refundable; lodge bookings should align with the permit date. The trek itself: you arrive at the park headquarters at 7am, attend a briefing, are assigned to a gorilla family based on your fitness and preferences, drive to the trailhead, then trek with armed rangers and a tracker who has located the gorilla family that morning. The trek can take 1-6 hours each way through bamboo forest and stinging nettles at altitudes of 2,500-3,500m. The hour with the gorillas is one of the most-extraordinary wildlife experiences on earth — the gorilla families are habituated but wild, the silverback may sit metres away, the juveniles may approach for curious observation. Photography is permitted with no flash. The age minimum is 15 years.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the country's most-emotionally-significant site. The memorial, opened 2004, is the burial site for 250,000+ victims of the 1994 genocide. The exhibitions are organised across three pavilions: the main pavilion telling the genocide history with the colonial-era ethnic-classification by the Belgians, the political deterioration through the 1980s, the 100 days of the genocide itself (April-July 1994), and the aftermath including the gacaca community-justice trials and the reconciliation process; the children's memorial with painful portrait-and-story exhibitions of named young victims; and the international genocide pavilion contextualising 1994 within the broader 20th-century mass-violence record (Armenia, Holocaust, Cambodia, Bosnia, the Holodomor). The exhibition is unflinching, emotionally heavy, but is widely considered one of the world's most-effectively-presented genocide memorials. Plan 2-3 hours for the visit. The memorial has formal hours but the surrounding gardens — where the victims are buried — are accessible at all hours. The companion sites at Murambi (a school where 50,000 victims were killed, preserved with mummified remains visible — extremely heavy emotional content, not recommended for everyone), Nyamata (a church massacre site with the bullet-holes in the walls preserved), and Gisozi are also significant and can be visited as part of a longer Rwanda genocide-history visit.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is the country's alternative primate experience. The 1,000 sq km of montane forest in the south-western corner harbours 13 primate species — chimpanzees (the headline activity, tracked by guides with permits at $90 vs the gorilla permits at $1,500), L'Hoest's monkeys, Angola colobus monkeys (the largest troop of these black-and-white monkeys, sometimes 400+ individuals seen together), grey-cheeked mangabeys, and the rare Rwenzori colobus. The 70m-high canopy walk (the longest in Africa, opened 2010) is a 1.5-hour walk including the 200m suspended-bridge crossing. Plus 300+ bird species including 26 Albertine Rift endemics. Nyungwe Forest Lodge and One&Only Nyungwe House are the splurge accommodation; the National Park guesthouses offer the budget alternative.

The food: Rwandan cuisine leans on agricultural staples — beans, plantains, sweet potatoes, cassava, the indigenous African leafy greens (sombe cassava-leaf stew, isombe spinach-style preparation), grilled tilapia from Lake Kivu, the urwarwa sorghum-or-banana beer of the rural tradition, and the increasingly-important specialty coffee from the country's washing-station network (Rwanda produces world-class Bourbon-varietal coffee from small-holder cooperatives; the Question Coffee Café in Kigali, Café Connexion at the Kigali Convention Centre, and the Hotel des Mille Collines' coffee selection all showcase the country's coffee heritage). The cultural-tourism dinners at the Iby'iwacu Cultural Village near Volcanoes National Park offer the Imboghouge traditional drumming, the Intore warrior-dance, and traditional foods prepared the traditional way.

UK travellers can apply for a visa on arrival ($50 USD, 30 days) or the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100, valid for Rwanda + Kenya + Uganda for 90 days — the better value if combining with neighbouring countries). Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF); cards work in upscale hotels and restaurants, cash for daily transactions. Kinyarwanda is the national language; French was the colonial-era inheritance; English has been the official language of business and education since 2009; Swahili is the third official language. All three (English, French, Kinyarwanda) plus Swahili are commonly spoken.

Best for: high-budget Africa travellers, primate-focused safari travellers, those drawn to remarkable post-conflict-reconstruction stories, photographers, families with older children (gorilla trekking has a 15-year age minimum), conservation-driven travellers. Often combined with Tanzania's Serengeti, Kenya's Masai Mara, or Uganda's gorilla-and-chimpanzee circuit for a 14-day East Africa headline trip.
