Saint Lucia holidays

The Pitons, rainforest interior and grown-up Caribbean — favoured for honeymoons.

Overview

Welcome to Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is the most-romantic small Caribbean island — the twin volcanic Pitons (Gros Piton and Petit Piton, UNESCO-listed, rising 770m and 743m straight from the sea); the drive-in volcano sulphur springs at Soufrière; the world-class luxury resorts of the south coast (Sugar Beach, Jade Mountain, Anse Chastanet, Ladera with its open-fourth-wall jungle suites looking onto the Pitons) and the more-accessible northern resorts (Sandals Grande St Lucian, Sandals Halcyon, BodyHoliday); the Diamond Falls and Mineral Baths in the botanical gardens; the Mamiku Gardens; and the calm bays for swimming and snorkelling (Marigot Bay, Pigeon Island, Anse Cochon).

A 7-10 day Saint Lucia trip: arrive at UVF Hewanorra (south airport — best for Soufrière/Pitons-south resorts) or GFL Vigie (north airport — Castries-and-Rodney-Bay-resorts side) → 7+ nights at one resort with day-trips by boat or 4x4. The classic split: 4 nights at a Pitons-view south resort (Sugar Beach, Jade Mountain, Ladera, Anse Chastanet — for the iconic two-Pitons view that is the lasting trip image) plus 3 nights at a Rodney Bay north resort (Sandals, BodyHoliday, the more lively beach-bar scene at Pigeon Island and Reduit Beach). Day trips: the Soufrière drive-in volcano + Sulphur Springs mud-bath + Diamond Falls + Tet Paul Nature Trail for the textbook Pitons photo viewpoint; the Pigeon Island National Park; the Marigot Bay boat trip with Doolittle's lunch stop. Active travellers add a Gros Piton or Petit Piton climb (the latter requires a guide, more technical).

UK travellers get 6 weeks visa-free entry. Saint Lucia uses the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD); US dollars universally accepted. English is the official language; St Lucian Creole (Kwéyòl, French-based) widely spoken. The food: green-fig-and-saltfish (the national dish — green banana with salt cod), bouyon stew, callaloo, the Friday-night Anse La Raye fish fry (locals from across the island go), the Gros Islet street-party on Friday nights for jerk chicken and music. The Saint Lucia Jazz Festival each May draws international artists to the open-air Pigeon Island stage.

Best for: honeymooners (Saint Lucia is one of the Caribbean's most-booked honeymoon destinations), couples celebrating milestone trips, adventure-curious beach travellers (Piton climb, ziplining at Rainforest Aerial Trams, rainforest hiking, sailing day-charters), Sandals-loyal returnees (Saint Lucia has three Sandals properties). Often combined with another Caribbean island via small-plane regional flights, or as a 10-day standalone trip from the UK.
