Tunisia holidays

Carthage Roman ruins, Tunis medina, the Saharan oases of Tozeur and Star Wars film sets — Tunisia is North Africa at value pricing.

Overview

Welcome to Tunisia

Tunisia is North Africa's most-Mediterranean country — Carthage's ancient ruins on Tunis's outskirts (UNESCO, the rival city of Rome that was burned and salted), the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said overlooking the Mediterranean (the prettiest small Tunisian town), the UNESCO old town (medina) of Tunis, the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre of El Jem (one of the largest in the world), the Star Wars filming sets at Matmata (the troglodyte cave-houses) and Mos Espa near Tozeur (the Tatooine landscape), the Sahara at Douz and Ksar Ghilane, and the beach-and-resort coast at Hammamet, Sousse and Djerba.

A 10-14 day Tunisia trip: Tunis (2-3 nights — the medina UNESCO old town, Bardo Museum mosaics, Carthage ruins, Sidi Bou Said day-trip) → Hammamet or Sousse beach (2 nights) → El Jem amphitheatre (1 night) → Tozeur and the Sahara (3-4 nights — Star Wars film sites at Mos Espa, the date-palm oasis of Chebika, camel-trek and overnight Bedouin camp at Ksar Ghilane or Douz) → Djerba Mediterranean island (2 nights — the El Ghriba synagogue, the heritage Houmt Souk old town, the beach hotels). Travel is by private vehicle with driver or in a small-group operator's convoy.

UK travellers get 90 days visa-free. Tunisia is the most-liberal North African country in cultural-religious terms — French is widely spoken alongside Tunisian Arabic, dress code is relaxed in tourism areas (Mediterranean-style not Gulf-style). The food: brik (egg-and-tuna stuffed pastry), couscous (Friday national dish), the spicy harissa paste in everything, fish-and-fennel-tagine on the coast, dates from the Tozeur oasis. Mint tea with pine nuts is the cafe ritual. The country runs on the Tunisian dinar; cards work in cities, cash for rural.

Best for: Mediterranean beach travellers wanting cultural depth (Tunisia is cheaper than Italy or Greece and culturally rich), Roman-archaeology travellers, Star Wars fans (the filming locations are real), Sahara-curious first-timers (the dunes at Ksar Ghilane are accessible). Often combined with Morocco or as a standalone Mediterranean alternative.
