Overview

Welcome to United States

The United States is the world's third-largest country (depending on how you count China and Russia) and one of its most-varied travel destinations — a country where you can do beach in Florida or Hawaii, city in New York or Chicago, desert in Arizona or Nevada, mountain in Colorado or Wyoming, wine in California or Oregon, forest in Pacific Northwest or New England, and theme parks in Orlando or Anaheim, all in different trips. Most UK travellers focus on one or two regions per trip: the East Coast (New York, Boston, Washington DC, Philadelphia — the cultural-historical loop), the West Coast and California (San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, plus the wine country Napa-Sonoma), the Southwest desert and national parks (Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Arches, Monument Valley — the iconic "American Wild West" landscapes), the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Portland, the Olympic and Mount Rainier national parks), the Deep South (New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville for music heritage), Florida (the Miami beach and South Beach Art Deco, the Florida Keys, the Orlando theme parks Disney/Universal), and Hawaii (the volcanic-island archipelago — Oahu for Waikiki and Pearl Harbor, Maui for snorkelling and the Hana Highway, Kauai for the dramatic Na Pali Coast).

A 14-day USA West Coast and Southwest trip: Los Angeles (3 nights — Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, the Getty Center, optional Universal Studios) → drive Pacific Coast Highway via Santa Barbara to San Francisco (3 nights — Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf, the Painted Ladies, optional Napa-Sonoma wine country day-trip) → fly to Las Vegas (2 nights — the Strip casinos, Cirque du Soleil show, optional helicopter to Grand Canyon) → road trip Grand Canyon-Bryce-Zion-Monument Valley loop (4-5 nights — Grand Canyon South Rim, Bryce Canyon hoodoos, Zion Canyon Narrows hike, Monument Valley on Navajo Tribal Park lands, Antelope Canyon) → optional fly to NYC for East Coast finish or back to LA. A 10-day East Coast trip: New York City (5 nights — Manhattan walking, Central Park, the Met, MoMA, Empire State, the Statue of Liberty, the High Line, Brooklyn, Williamsburg, the Broadway theatre district), Washington DC (3 nights — the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, the White House and Capitol exterior, Arlington Cemetery), Boston (2 nights — Freedom Trail, Harvard, the North End Italian quarter, Fenway Park).

UK travellers need an ESTA approval (apply online at least 72 hours before travel, $21, valid 2 years). The USA uses the US Dollar; cards are universal but always carry some cash for tips (15-20% in restaurants is mandatory, $1-2 per bag for porters, $1-2 per night for hotel housekeeping, $1-2 for bartenders). English is the universal language with Spanish widely spoken in California, Texas, Florida and the Southwest. The food culture is genuinely one of the world's most-varied: BBQ in Texas, Kansas City, Memphis, the Carolinas (each with their own style); soul food in the Deep South (gumbo, jambalaya, cornbread, collard greens); seafood on both coasts (Maine lobster, San Francisco Dungeness crab, Florida stone crab, Pacific Northwest oysters); Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican; New York pizza vs Chicago deep-dish vs Detroit-style; Cajun and Creole in Louisiana; Asian-American innovation (Korean-Mexican fusion in LA, Vietnamese in Houston and Westminster CA); plus the world-class fine-dining scenes in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and increasingly Charleston, Nashville and Portland.

Best for: every type of traveller, depending on which region you choose. Most UK first-timers do a one-region focus rather than trying to cover too much ground. Repeat visitors often build the trip around a specific theme: national parks, music heritage, jazz/blues, BBQ pilgrimage, theme parks, beach holidays, road-trip Route 66. The USA rewards the prepared traveller — book accommodations and major national park lodges 6-12 months ahead for peak summer.

FAQs

United States — your questions

When is the best time to visit the US?

The National Parks are at their best May–October. East Coast cities work year-round (best April–June, September–November). California and the Southwest avoid mid-summer in interior (Death Valley 50°C in July).

Do I need a visa for the US?

UK passport holders need an ESTA ($21) for tourist trips under 90 days. We arrange this as part of your booking. ESTA must be approved before boarding.

Is a US road-trip practical?

Yes — and it's one of the world's great travel experiences. We plan classic routes: Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, Utah's national parks, Florida's Keys, New England's leaf-peeping loop.

Is the US good for families?

Yes — Florida-Orlando is the obvious family-week. Pacific NW (Seattle + Portland + Cannon Beach), New York + Cape Cod, and California family road-trips all work well.

How do I deal with the size and distances?

Pick one region; resist the temptation to coast-to-coast in 14 days. Internal flights are cheap and frequent; rental cars are essential in the National Parks.
